Founders

Tina Boville is the co-founder and CEO of Aralez Bio, a startup using directed evolution to unlock noncanonical amino acids. She has been recognized as one of MIT Technology Review's Innovators Under 35, an Activate Fellow, and a Biotech Founder to Watch. Boville received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Colorado and then conducted her postdoctoral research at Caltech as a Resnick Prize Postdoctoral Fellow, where she co-developed the platform that Aralez Bio uses today.

David Romney received his Ph.D. from Yale University, where he designed peptide-based catalysts for selective mono-oxygenation reactions. For this research, he was recognized in 2015 with the Richard Wolfgang Prize in Chemistry for best doctoral thesis. He then conducted research with Frances Arnold as a NIH Postdoctoral Scholar, helping to develop robust methods to synthesize noncanonical amino acids using the tryptophan synthase platform. Most recently David was named to C&EN’s Talented 12 for his work at Aralez Bio.

Frances Arnold is the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry at Caltech, where she pioneered methods of directed protein evolution. Her work has been recognized with the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Millennium Technology Prize, the Charles Stark Draper Prize of the National Academy of Engineering, the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and the 2025 Priestley Medal. She is an elected member of the US National Academies of Science, Medicine, and Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Peter Hutchings is a seasoned sales executive with extensive experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Currently serving as Vice President of Sales at Aralez Bio since March 2025, Peter previously held the role of Executive Vice President of Sales at AmbioPharm from September 2023 to March 2025. Peter’s notable tenure at Bachem spanned a decade, where responsibilities included leading global commercial strategies for exclusive APIs and driving sales growth in the Americas. Peter's earlier roles include regional sales leadership positions at Silicon Biosystems and NanoScreen, as well as various sales and business development roles at organizations such as Cambridge Research Biochemicals and Eklin Medical Systems.

Katie Greenfield is a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience in Venture Capital, specializing in healthtech, life sciences, and climatech. In her roles as VP Finance or CFO, she has guided companies in fundraising, M&A, cash, debt, and runway management, as well as strategic financial planning. Serving as a key partner to CEOs and leadership teams, Katie's expertise in operational and financial organization has been instrumental for growth stages and strategic planning, driving the success of innovative ventures in transformative industries.

Bjorn Traag is the Senior Director of Research & Development at Aralez Bio. Bjorn received his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Leiden University (Leiden, Netherlands) in 2008 and conducted his postdoctoral research at Harvard University, studying the regulation of cell differentiation and spore dormancy in bacterial species. Since 2013, he has held leadership roles in R&D at Bayer (Fortune 500 company), Joyn Bio (a Bayer-Ginkgo Bioworks synbio joint venture), Zymergen (a pioneer in synbio), and Andes (climate-biotech start-up), developing sustainable products and solutions using biology.

Having grown up in Silicon Valley, Paul Yu-Yang has been exposed to decades of groundbreaking biotech and high tech developments giving him a variety of concepts and best practices to inspire his work at Aralez. Technical operations at Aralez includes scale up & process optimization, QA/QC, equipment & facilities, and EHS. Paul’s industrial background includes time at Genentech (MSATS in mammalian cell culture manufacturing), BioMarin (scale up technology, facilities startup, and capacity planning), and Zymergen (scale-down tech transfer of microbial organisms). He has received degrees from UC Davis (Phd – Biomedical engineering/MBA), Stanford (MA - Education) and UC Berkeley (BS - Bioengineering).

Lin Louie did her PhD in Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley in Alex Bell's Group, focused on chemical catalysis and greener alternatives for jet and diesel fuel. She continued her focus on sustainability by developing scalable chemical processes for several bio-based products at Visolis, Zymergen, and Lygos. Her expertise is leading processes and products from bench to manufacturing and is excited to support Aralez Bio’s commercial scale production of ncAAs.

Danielle Applestone, PhD is a fractional People Operations executive with 18 years of experience as a co-founding CEO across multiple industries. In her roles as VP People or CPO, she partners with leadership to align team growth with business needs, strengthen culture, and build scalable systems. Danielle’s work spans organizational design, hiring strategy, and leadership development—helping early-stage and growth companies create high-performing, values-driven teams that can execute and adapt through change.
